Water 2005 drill – flood-protection barriers hand-over

Today, at Kampa, short after noon, Václav Šimek, deputy director of Prague Fire Fighters, handed over to Pavel Bém, Mayor of Prague, the implemented flood protection system of Prague.

Mayor Bém said on the occasion: „Let me first of all thank all Prague citizens for their exceptional open-mindedness during the drill.. Not a single car had to be towed away and no traffic problem appeared. After the 2002 flood experience, a decision was taken to build anti-flood barriers by Prague Fire Fighters. In co-operation with other units, they have managed to build 2.5 km of mobile dams weighing 250 tons composed of 700 stop logs, a great number of sluice pillars and other technological elements, including the most complicated one on Čertovka canal. Everything was completed on Saturday 23 July at 7:54 am, the original scheduled completion time was 12:00. We are thus able to cut the time interval of Prague flood protection construction which will be less time-demanding that was originally foreseen in the flood plan.” The Mayor also thanked all participating units deployed within WATER 2005 drill. Finally, he observed with pleasure that all technologies proved functional and that no work injury has been reported.
