Rohožník - Dubeč Quarry Natural Monument

Principal data Two separate sites (abandoned quarries) between Dubeček and Dubeč in the slope on the right-hand side of the Říčanský Potok brook, connected by a narrow strip of protection zone. Cadastre: Dubeč - Prague 10. Area: 3.45 ha. Elevation: 250 - 270 m above sea level. Established by the Ordinance of Prague Municipality No. 5/1988 of July 4, 1988.

Reason of establishment, principal motive of protection Important outcrops of Řevnice quartzites and further rocks of the Libeň formation (Ordovician) enabling the research of their lithology and tectonics. An M-fold exposure and a significant landscape element.

Geology, geomorphology, pedology Locally folded Řevnice quartzites of the Libeň formation of the Ordovician. In its western part the Rohožník quarry shelf exposes an M-fold. The synkline core shows the overburden shales of the Libeň formation. The Dubeč quarry exposes a radial fracture surface with conserved overburden stratum of basic conglomerates of fresh water Cretaceous (Peruc formation). The quarry wall distinctly exposes horizontal tectonic grooves. The conglomerates disintegrate heavily and form gravel strata in the areas of their occurrence. The general inclination of the strata is about 30o - 35o to Northwest. Ranker soils change into brown soils at the foot and floodplain soils in the alluvia of the Říčanský Potok brook.

Botany Grass cover with oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius),sedge (Carex praecox) and thyme (Thymus pannonicus). The southwestern slope hosts detritus communities with Scleanthus perennis, the deeper soils are covered with grass with Festuca rupicola and the silver cinquefoil (Potentilla argentea).

Zoology Nesting site of the magpie the long-eared owl. The invertebrates are represented only by more frequent dry pasture specis.

Forestry Austrian pine has been planted in the protection zone. The Dubeč quarry area is overgrown with wind-swept wood species, such as birches, partly eliminated during improvement measures.

Economic exploitation, principal threats, proposed care of protected area Quartzite outcrop with a proved historical settlement. The quarries are used for grazing by minor domestic animals. The wood is managed according to an approved forest management plan. The soughwestern slope should be kept unforested.

Notes The area forms part of the Říčanka natural park and is used for excursions.
